When to go
The hours just after sunrise and just before sunset are your best bet for wildlife activity. Many animals rest during the heat of the day, especially in summer, so early mornings and golden evenings are your window to catch them on the move.

WHERE TO LOOK
Visitor Centers: The Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center in town and the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose are great starting points for maps, current sightings, and up-to-date advice. The Moose location even features educational exhibits and a small natural history museum.
Snake River Bridge: Park near the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor center in Moose and walk across the bridge over the Snake River. Moose love the willows and water here, especially in the morning.
Highway Park Loop: Head north on Highway 89 past the airport and the Moose entrance to Grand Teton National Park. Between Moose and Moran, look for bison grazing in the open fields. Loop back through the Moran entrance and stop at Oxbow Bend, a peaceful turnout known for birdwatching and the occasional river otter. Continue through the park, keeping an eye out for bears, before exiting at Moose. Pro Tip: Wrap up any park adventure with a bite or drink on the rooftop deck at Dornan’s.
National Elk Refuge: On the far east side of town, the Elk Refuge is home to pronghorn and other wildlife. Bring binoculars and scan the sagebrush hillsides.

safety
Drive Carefully: If you see cars pulled over, it usually means there’s wildlife nearby. Drive slowly and cautiously—both for the animals and the distracted people likely wandering in the road. Never stop in the middle of the road; always find a safe turnout.
Give Wildlife Space: It’s tempting to get close for the perfect photo, but animals in this area are wild, fast, and potentially dangerous. Keep kids and pets in the car, and use binoculars or a zoom lens to view from afar.
Carry Bear Spray: If you're venturing out on foot, carry bear spray and know how to use it. You can rent bear spray through Outfitted and have it delivered to your Outpost rental before you even arrive.
