Yesterday, July 23, at approximately 10:19 a.m., a localized hydrothermal explosion occurred near Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin, located just north of Old Faithful. This rare event, while intriguing, serves as a reminder of the dynamic and ever-changing nature of Yellowstone National Park.
What Happened?
A hydrothermal explosion, which is a natural and expected part of Yellowstone’s geothermal activity, resulted in the temporary closure of Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, for safety reasons. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the extent of damage is currently under assessment.
What You Need to Know
- Safety First: Park staff and USGS experts are diligently monitoring the area and will reopen Biscuit Basin once it is deemed safe. The Grand Loop Road remains open, ensuring that your travel plans remain unaffected.
- No Cause for Alarm: It’s important to note that this explosion does not indicate any change in the volcanic system of Yellowstone. The park remains at normal background levels of activity, and all other areas are open and safe for visitors.
- Ongoing Updates: As this is an evolving incident, additional details will be shared as they become available. You can stay informed by following updates from Yellowstone National Park and the U.S. Geological Survey.
