Celebrating the Grand American West

The Quick Draw on Town Square

Jagged peaks spring from the valley floor; turquoise waters lay shrouded in steam, trapped within golden mineral prisms; canyons tear through rock and root, opening the earth to roaring waters that rush through its plummeting cliff walls. When Thomas Moran and his companions in the 1871 Hayden Expedition first set out for what is today Yellowstone National Park, their goal was to gather proof of this legendary landscape to help advocate for its protection and preservation. Crucial to the establishment of our nation’s first national park, the images that captured our surroundings, dramatic in both scale and scope, helped to ignite western migration, resulting in the America we know today.

Since then, painters and photographers have flocked to Jackson Hole to try their hand at bringing the iconic, grand American West to life. With glittering aspen trees and swaying prairie grasses gently framing our sky-piercing peaks, turquoise prisms, and earth-torn canyons, our valley shimmers in golden hues throughout the month of September, offering a backdrop to inspire artists and voyers alike. From September 7th-18th, join us in celebrating art inspired by our stunning surroundings during Jackson’s annual Fall Arts Festival.

While there’s no shortage of western art to take in while in town, one of the most exciting outcomes of this naturally inspiring landscape is the array of interpretations and artistic expressions that spring from our surroundings. Whether or not you make it in time for the Fall Arts Festival, be sure to take advantage of our thriving arts scene while you’re in town.

Round off Your Summer in Jackson Hole

If you ask a “local” what brought them to Jackson, they’ll likely tell you it was Jackson’s epic and legendary free skiing. If you follow up with what kept them here, they’ll tell you emphatically: Summer in the Tetons.

Late Summer Sunset over Mormon Row

Some take refuge on the cool, ribboning Snake River, casting flies, rafting, or braving the whitewater in river kayaks. Others seek meditative, soul-touching experiences in our mountains’ dramatic and awe-inspiring peaks. Regardless of your draw to the Tetons, there is something here for everyone.

The best part of your summer getaway doesn’t stop short in the mountains either. With just three (maybe four if we’re lucky) short months to take in all that summertime brings, there’s a fervent energy that draws in artists and musicians alike every year.

From July 3 through August 27, the Grand Teton Music Festival brings renowned musicians from across the country to perform in Teton Village. Check their calendar and be sure to book in advance of your visit.

Take in the exceptional spread from local and national artists featured at our annual Art Fair on August 5-7. From fine art to ceramics, paintings, furniture, photography, jewelry, and so much more, be sure to plan your trip to accommodate this wonderful event.

Pick up a pair of cowboy boots from the Town Square, and head to the rodeo for a real taste of the Wyoming dazzle. Be sure to book your tickets in advance as they do book out quickly.

And of course, there’s the Teton County Fair. With all the usual rides and games, our fair is a great way to have a good time alongside the local community. Check the schedule for daily events, and enjoy a quintessential summer night at the fairground.

Regardless of your preference for activities, there’s something here to not only please, but wow everyone in your group. End your summer on a high note, and book your Jackson Hole adventure today. You will not regret a moment spent here.

Tuesday Night Bluegrass

There’s really only one place to be in Jackson Hole on a Tuesday evening: front and center of the well-worn dance floor at The Silver Dollar Bar for Bluegrass night. The longest running band in residency here, One Ton Pig, will have you stomping, head bumping, or full-on country western two-stepping with the first notes of singer-songwriter Michael Batdorf’s guitar.

After over eleven years of the weekly gig, it’s no wonder the bar inside The Wort Hotel is packed at 7:30pm by locals and visitors alike year round — these guys know how to have a good time. As I worm my way up through the crowd during a set break, I’m surrounded by cowboy boots, fancy dress boots, sneakers, even ski boots, and a contagious energy that immediately smacks a smile on my face. Bits of conversations hang in the air; locals pumped about getting a ski run in before work, a mother and son banter over their bumpy plane ride in, two old friends catch each other’s eye and run up in giggles to hug.

While the night is called Bluegrass night, the small stage is cluttered with reverb and distortion pedals, and One Ton Pig is known to play straight-up bluegrass to blues to funk and everything in between. In other words, if you don’t like the first song (said no one ever), stick around. In fact, the gig has become so popular that about four years ago the bar expanded to double in size specifically to hold the Tuesday night crowd. The renovation is a beautiful one — the new bar is a mirror of the original bar, hundreds of silver dollars making up the long countertops and the same cozy and country feel throughout.

A few minutes later, the band members start to gather back on the stage, tuning guitars, swigging the rest of their beers. At first glance, One Ton Pig looks like a band made for a ski town — baseball caps, mustaches, rough stubble beards. But the moment they let their instruments loose, everyone in the bar is instantly transported to Nashville; these are six incredibly talented musicians, and Jackson Hole hit the jackpot to have them end up here.

“For all you old timers,” Michael yells out from the stage. “Here’s one from out of the dust bowl…” With that, they kick off into high gear, the crowd jumping into dance positions to keep up with them. An older couple who drove in from their (real) dude ranch glide across the floor in perfect form, swinging and twirling between millennials mixing country and pop dance styles. By the time the fiddler and mandolin player tag team a solo to a railroad blurring bluegrass beat, the entire bar is on its feet, and the dance floor only clearing long enough to grab a quick shot of whiskey between songs. Conversations turn to whistles and hollers for more and more music, and with that I’ve got to take my puffy coat off and dive in. Luckily, we’ve still got a nice long set ahead of us — this town doesn’t sleep on Tuesdays because the band plays all night.
